DRUG INFORMATION CENTER

The Drug Information Center (DIC) is maintained by the Department of Pharmacy Practice. The drug information center aims to provide unbiased, well referenced, critically evaluated, up-to-date relevant information about drugs and/or any related aspects of drugs (could be related to disease or even vaccines) to the drug information query requestors/ enquirers. Requestors or enquirers could be physicians, surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, patients, general public, interns or clinical researchers.

Drug information fulfils the two major needs of the enquirers. One it aids to update the knowledge and second it provides vital information for the patient care.

Two drug information centers are maintained by the Department of Pharmacy Practice, one in the hospital and one in the college. The DIC is working under the supervision of well qualified faculties who have good knowledge in the critical appraisal of drug information and necessary technical and professional proficiency in tailoring the information needed by the enquirer.

Basic information reference books related to Physiology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Pharmacotherapeutics, Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmacokinetics, Toxicology, Adverse Drug Reactions, and Dose Calculations.

Computer facilities with printer and internet.

Drug information database (Clinirex).

Facility for group discussion and clinical presentations.

Functions of DIC

Providing latest information on latest drugs/ vaccine to the enquirers as per request.

Providing dose calculation for special conditions such as pediatrics, elderly, pregnant women, lactating mother, hepatic or renal disorders, etc.,

Preparation of hospital formulary.

Preparation of patient information leaflet.

Preparation of guideline policy or protocol for appropriate drug use.

Preparation of patient education chart or posters.

Information on admixtures and dilutions of IV.

Preparation of diet charts and lifestyle charts for the patients.

Vaccine information chart for pediatrics.

Leaflet and chart preparation for special administration devices such as inhalers or insulin injections.

Department related research findings dissemination to the hospital authorities.

Educational programs for the students and medical staffs in the hospital.

Preparation of materials and forms for the medical camps.

Adverse drug reaction report dissemination to the hospital authorities

Participating in quality improvement project works in the hospital.

Coordination with the institutional review board of the hospital.

Provide necessary literature support for the research activities in the department

Provide educational materials required for the patient counseling unit functioning in the college.
